Visit Portsmouth New Hampshire

If you’re visiting Southern Maine for vacation, you should also stop by Portsmouth New Hampshire. Downtown Portsmouth is historic with cobblestone streets and brick sidewalks leading to a tremendous selection of boutique shops, restaurants, and brew pubs. Many restaurants feature waterfront decks.

Take a boat ride on the Isle of Shoals Steamboat Co. to tour Portsmouth Harbor and the outlying islands – the Isles of Shoals Islands themselves are steep in seafaring history. The islands in Portsmouth Harbor have been hotly debated between Maine and New Hampshire; in fact the Portsmouth Naval Base is technically in Maine – so the Pine Tree State won that one from the Granite State.Portsmouth Waterfront

Portsmouth is a great walking town from the old Church in Market Square to Strawberry Banke Museum – a living history museum of the earliest settlers to this region. Prescott Park on the waterfront is home to summer concerts and theatre, and just a great place to picnic with provisions from an in town bakery.

Portsmouth hosts year round events for families, foodies and art lovers alike including the well known Prescott Park Arts Festival. For fall vacationers, you may want to check into the New Hampshire Brew Fest at the Redhook Ale Brewery which servers samplers and live music and entertainment. The brewery is also deserving to visit for a fun tour and dining at the restaurant.

Portsmouth also offers mall shopping and all your favorite department stores at the Fox Run Mall, also known as the Newington Mall.

Drive or walk over to Peirce Island which gives you commanding views of Piscataqua River surrounding bridges and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The 27-acre island offers walking trails, playgrounds as well as boat launches. Here, you have an outdoor pool area and restroom facilities–making it a great place to spend an afternoon as well as a picnic.Find lodgings in Portsmouth New Hampshire.
