Top Things to Do on the Southern Maine Coast

If Maine is the way life should be, you should be here… we think the best of Maine is the southern Maine coast. Its easiest to reach, has the most sandy beach, plenty of lighthouses and lobster, everything iconic Maine, without the long drive upta Bar Harbor and beyond….

  1. Lobster – get ya lobstah just ovah the bordah… (Maine slang) you can stop in York, Kittery, or carry on further “down east” to satisfy your crustacean craving.   2. Lighthouses – Southern Maine has a dozen lighthouses, including two of the world’s most majestic and most photographed- Cape Neddick’s Nubble Light, and Portland Headlight – Maine’s oldest – 1791. See this Guide to Maine Lighthouses on the southern Maine coast.
  3. Beaches – our coast is loaded with lovely sand beaches, from York’s Long Sand and Short Sands Beach to Ogunquit Beach, Wells Beach, several beaches in Kennebunk and Kennebunkport and Goose Rocks, to Old Orchard Beach and near Portland Ferry Beach, Scarborough and Higgins beach. Sand, surf, salt air and sea views…. Here are Maine’s best beaches on the south coast.
  4. Boating – the best way to see the Maine coast is by sea. Charter a sailboat cruise, hop on a lobster boat tour to pull some traps, take a Whale Watch to the outer banks, a Ferry around Casco Bay, or just kayak the harbors and along the coast.   5. Bike around the beautiful country roads and scenic ocean side drives in southern Maine. To rally appreciate the serenity and scenery of Maine, take the road less traveled and pedal, along Ocean Ave in Kennebunkport, or the Eastern trail, or the more adventurous mountain bike paths of Mt Agamenticus.
  6. Shop the treasure of southern Maine. Whether its that weathered antique you seek from a Wells boutique- the antique shoppers capital of Maine, or a cool Maine made craft from Perkins Cove in Ogunguit, to the bargain hunters haven of Mardens  and Reny’s in Biddeford. Last but not least is Kittery – the outlet capital of Maine, and Freeport – home to LL Bean, open 24/7/365.
  7. Explore the seaside towns – many of New England’s best towns are in the southernmost part of Maine. Kennebunkport has its cute shops, galleries and restaurants, while Portland’s Old Port is packed with cool boutiques and bars. Ogunquit is an art community with flair, while Freeport has a beautiful hidden waterfront – on the Harasseeket – most don’t see when they beeline to the outlets on Main Street..
  8. Eat Maine – its not just lobstah and buttah. Maine has a real up and coming foodie scene. Top Chefs are coming to Maine and the cuisine is up and coming because of it. Portland has amazing restaurants, James Beard award winning chefs, and Maine is home to some hot food and wine festivals like Harvest on the Harbor and The Kennebunkport Festival – fun food and wine infused celebrations on the cusp of going big.
  9. Stay for a day, a night or two. Since southern Maine is so easy to get to, just over an hour from Boston, you can come for just an overnight or two, play all day – hit the beach, the boutiques, have that bite of lobster, go for a boat ride, and book a beautiful room at The Boathouse Waterfront Hotel, a waterfront resort like The Cliff House or Stage Neck Inn, or a cozy BnB like Captain Lord Mansion or an inn like Breakwater Inn and Spa in Kennebunkport or The Seaside right on Kennebunk Beach.
  10. Leave only your footprints on the beach, but take lots of photos. Maine is a most photonic place, so you’ll want to snap lots of picks to post on facebook and insta #visitmaine #vacationland#Sea you soon on the southern Maine Coast!

Maine is famous for its food- more than just lobster!

stripers-lobster-bakeA trip to Maine is not complete with a crustacean… a fresh Maine lobster steamed and served with drawn butter. But there is much more to the Maine food scene than just seafood – clams, scallops, crab, oysters, mussels and fish.  You also have to sample Maine specialty foods like saltwater taffy, made right before your eyes at the Golden Rod in York Beach.

DCIM100GOPROGOPR0442.Maine blueberries and strawberries are delicious in early summer -whether eaten fresh and simply by the handful of berries, or baked in cakes, pies, muffins, shortcake and cobbler or jams.  Maine gourmets are making their own delicious artisan cheese, apple cider in season and fresh berry jams and preserves. You can tour Stonewall Kitchen in York, and learn about their award winning Maine recipes and specialty food products.

old-vines-bar-tableThere are numerous Maine breweries and Maine wineries like Cellardoor using native berries to create unique homemade brews and wines. There is even a potato vodka made right here with Maine potatoes – one of Maine greatest products. Maine is also a top producer of broccoli – who knew?!

colony-kennebunkport-festival-aspenEnd your day with a cocktail on the deck of a gorgeous inn, or one of our favorite spots on the waterfront, then enjoy a perfectly prepared seafood dinner followed by homemade blueberry pie for desert.

In Scarborough, you can visit the world’s largest moose made entirely of chocolate (chocolate moose – get it?!) at Libby’s – next to Cabela’s.

So save room in your car for live Maine lobster packed to go, fresh picked Maine crabmeat, Maine Harbor candies, fresh Maine blueberries, and a quart of Maine maple syrup. Or you can just stay another day and try more of Maine’s best restaurants.

Where’s the Maine Lobster at Maine Restaurant Week?

Maine has arrived as a Foodie State, now hosting several Maine Restaurant Week events – in the fall and spring. Having caught the culinary attention of top food magazines and media of late, Bon Appetite, Gourmet, Saveur, Taste, Food and Wine, and The Food Network have all featured Maine’s best chefs, the Maine local food scene and of course – articles on Maine seafood with lobster as the king. But recent culinary competitions have me wondering where’s the Maine lobster – instead of “where’s the beef?”

davids-serverMarch 1-14 Maine Restaurant Week 2015 kicked off their Signature Tasting Event as Maine chefs paired a cocktail and signature dish – but the menus fell short of Maine ingredients and culinary classic that have made Maine’s seacoast famous. Here’s a sampling of Maine Restaurant Week tastes, with seafood and lobster sadly under-represented:

The new Portland restaurant, Timber Steakhouse, won Maine Restaurant Week Signature Judge’s Taste with a cucumber martini and bite-sized cucumber cup filled with smoked salmon-goat cheese mousse and topped with tobiko (Japanese fish roe). David’s Opus Ten in Portland won People’s Choice wit1kbpt-sign-hearth a Mexican chocolate martini and pulled pork beignet. Chef David Turin now has a very successful sister restaurant to his Portland original, David’s KPT in Kennebunkport at the Boathouse Waterfront Hotel near Dock Square on the Kennebunk River.

Other Kennebunk based chefs, chefs Brian and Shana O’Hea from Kennebunk Inn – served a meatball slider skewered with fried mozzarella with an Italian Sunday Tuxedo -a spicy style bloody Mary, made of pureed roasted vegetables, hopefully from Maine gardens.

Another other-worldly taste from Tiqa, the new Mediterranean restaurant on Commercial Street in Portland, served The Miss Muffet Cocktail combining Double Cross Vodka (Ok- a Maine potatoes based Vodka – finally), Vya dry vermouth and labne whey (the milky liquid from strained yogurt), garnished with a Palestinian olive, paired with chef Bryan Dame’s Berbere-spiced labne on crispy chicken skin. So much for the good old fashioned Maine lobster roll or Clam Chowder. Is anyone else hankering for some recipes representing Maine flavors and fresh seafood?

lobsterGood news, you can dine at Stripers at the Breakwater Inn in Kennebunkport on their 2 for $20 Lobster Lovers menu this month. Also from March 1-14, foodies can dine at participating Maine Restaurant Week restaurants on three course lunches and dinners – specially prepared by the Chefs at a prixe fixe of $15, $20 and $25 for lunch, $25, $35 and $45 for dinner. I hope the Chefs include local lobster.

Maine Restaurant Week is predominantly Portland Maine restaurants, but expands to Freeport, Boothbay and south to Kennebunkport, Ogunquit and York, where Maine’s best Chefs flaunt their flavors and local-sourced food turned into culinary delights.

lobster-ocean-bloodyNew this year to Maine’s food scene is Coastal Maine Restaurant Week – April 26 – May 2 Coastal Maine Restaurants will offer special dining menus, in Kittery York, Ogunquit, Wells, Kennebunkport and Kennebunk – organized by the York County Coast Star. During this week southern Maine chefs will prepare special three course gourmet menus –often with an ocean view at a prix fixe dinner of $25, $35, and $45 per person, before beverages, tax and gratuity. Ok, maybe not a deal, but a special tasting experience.
